Fit Tips: Your At-Home Dress Measuring Guide

Ordering the correct size wedding dress can be intimidating. After all, if there's one day you want everything to be perfect, this is it! The last thing you want is to be stressed about whether your dress will fit you like a glove. But fear not! We're here to guide you through the process and ensure that you order the perfect wedding dress size with confidence.

Why is ordering the correct size important?

Ordering the correct size for your wedding dress is crucial because it determines how well the dress will fit you on your big day. A dress that is too small can be uncomfortable and restrict your movement, while a dress that is too big may require costly alterations and may not flatter your figure as intended. By ordering the correct size, you can ensure that your dress fits you like a dream and makes you feel absolutely stunning.

How to measure yourself accurately

Before you start browsing for your dream wedding dress, take accurate measurements of your bust, waist, and hips. Use a soft measuring tape and follow a size chart provided by the dress designer or retailer. It's important to measure yourself correctly, as this will help you determine the size that will best fit your body shape.

Understanding size charts

Size charts can vary between different designers and retailers, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with the specific size chart of the dress you're interested in. Pay attention to the measurements listed for each size and compare them to your own measurements. If you fall between two sizes, it's generally recommended to order the larger size and have the dress altered if necessary.

Consulting with a professional

If you're unsure about your measurements or the size chart, don't hesitate to reach out to a professional. Many bridal boutiques have experienced consultants who can guide you through the process and help you determine the best size for your wedding dress. They can also provide valuable advice on alterations and any specific considerations for the dress you choose.

Ordering well in advance

When it comes to ordering your wedding dress, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Wedding dresses often require several months to be made and delivered, so it's important to order well in advance. This allows for any necessary alterations and ensures that you have ample time to make any adjustments if needed.

Final thoughts

Ordering the correct size wedding dress doesn't have to be intimidating. By taking accurate measurements, understanding size charts, consulting with professionals, and ordering well in advance, you can ensure that your dress fits you perfectly on your special day. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you'll be walking down the aisle in the wedding dress of your dreams!

Fortunately, it's surprisingly easy to measure yourself at home with a few basic tools and tricks of the trade (and maybe a friend to help out). To demystify the process,  Technical Design Director, to share her secrets for spot-on, like-a-glove fits.

If you can't make it into a Mari Bella Bridal Galleria Weddings store, simply follow Beth's step-by-step guide for measuring success. (The best part? This method works for all styles, from wedding gowns to bridesmaid dresses to cocktail sheaths!)

(1) To get started, you'll need a full-length mirror, a soft measuring tape, and (ideally) a friend to assist. If possible, wear the shapewear and shoes you plan to pair with your dress.

(2) Take your measurements while standing straight in front of your mirror to ensure the tape is level around your body. Don't pull too tightly or leave too much slack, as this will skew the measurements. If you don't have an assistant, remember to wrap the tape from back to front so you can easily read the numbers.

(3) First, take your bust measurement. Wrap the tape around the fullest area of your bust, under your arms.

(4) Next is the waist. Measure the slimmest part of your waist, just below the ribcage and above your bellybutton.

(5) For your hip measurement, wrap the tape around the fullest area of your hips (including your bum).

(6) Finally, the length measurement. Starting at the top of your shoulder, measure down the front of your body, over your bust, to the floor.

(7) Once you've completed your measurements, compare them to the Size Guide on the product page of the style you're considering.

(8) For body-hugging styles, we recommend selecting the size that best matches your largest measurement (bust, waist, or hip). For A-line or ballgown styles, focus on your bust and waist measurements, then select the size that matches the largest of the two. Remember, it's always easier to take something in than to let it out!

(9) To get a sense of how long a style will be on you, compare your body length to the shoulder-to-hem length indicated in the item's Fit Information.
